Answers before you plan a live studio project

Frequently asked questions

These are the questions producers and station managers ask us most often before a project begins. If yours is not here, the contact page is the quickest way to reach us.

  1. What kinds of studios do you work on?

We plan and fit out studios for live news programmes, interviews and talk shows. That covers new builds, upgrades to an existing gallery and converted rooms that were never designed for broadcast. Most clients are regional stations, independent producers and organisations setting up an in-house studio. We start by looking at the space and the format of the programme.

  2. Can you take on only one part of a project?

Yes. Some clients ask us for lighting design alone, or an acoustic survey of a room they already own. Others want the whole studio, from equipment integration to rehearsal support. Because camera, sound and lighting are planned by the same people, a single service still takes account of how the other disciplines will use the room.

  3. How do you decide which equipment to specify?

We begin with the programme format, the number of presenters and guests, and the budget, then choose vision mixers, monitors, intercom and routing to suit. We do not push a particular range. The aim is a gallery your own operators can run confidently, so we also look at training, maintenance access and how easily the system can grow later.

  4. Do you provide camera crews for live shows?

Yes. Our camera operation and direction service covers shot planning, experienced operators and a director for bulletins, interviews and multi-camera panel shows. We agree the shot list and camera positions in advance and run a rehearsal before transmission. Crew size depends on the format, and we confirm it in writing before the date is fixed.

  5. What does an acoustic assessment involve?

We visit the room, measure reverberation and background noise, and listen to how speech behaves at the intended presenter and guest positions. You then receive a written recommendation covering panel placement, treatment and microphone positions. Where treatment is needed, we can supply and fit it. Many rooms improve noticeably with modest changes rather than a full rebuild.

  6. Will your lighting work with the cameras we already have?

Lighting plans are drawn up around your cameras, the colour temperature you intend to run and the height of the ceiling or grid. We use LED fixtures that stay consistent through long broadcasts and balance key, fill and background light on site. If your cameras are due for replacement, we can advise on timing so the lighting does not need reworking.

  7. Can you help us on the day of a live broadcast?

Our live production workflow support covers rundown planning, rehearsal and technical assistance during transmission. We work alongside your producer so that cues, graphics, sound levels and camera moves are agreed before going on air. If something fails mid-programme, there is a plan for it, because the failure points were discussed earlier.

  8. How do I get a price for my project?

Prices for each service are on the Prices page, with an estimate calculator for a rough figure. For a firm number, send an enquiry through the contact page describing the studio, the programme format and your timescale. We reply with a written quotation, and work begins once you confirm it.
